Character Development

Struggling to find a way to instill in your child the traits of respect and discipline?

Character Development at Zen Dan Kwan School of Martial Arts starts from the very beginning of your Martial Arts training. Each class begins with a recitation of our Student Creed. The Student Creed is a powerful statement of our intentions with our training, and our attitude towards the Martial Arts.

Zen Dan Kwan School of Martial Arts Student Creed

My Aim

I will develop myself in a positive manner and actively seek knowledge and skills that will increase my mental growth and physical health.

My Plan

I will develop self discipline in order to bring out the best in myself and in others.

My Promise to Myself

I shall be truthful, respectful, courageous and above all, I will always persevere.

My Promise to the World

I will only use Zen Dan Kwan for good, and the defence of correct principles. I shall never misuse Zen Dan Kwan in any circumstances.

My Goal

Black Belt!

At Zen Dan Kwan School of Martial Arts we develop good character in your child using our time honoured 8 Traits of Black Belt Excellence. They are a core philosophy of our School and are conveyed in everything we do from our STAR Programme through to the Black Belt Club.

As students progress through the curriculum covering the physical skills of Zen Dan Kwan School of Martial Arts, they also progress through a curriculum covering Zen Dan Kwan's 8 Traits of Black Belt Excellence. These essential Character Traits are:

Honesty, Modesty, Courtesy, Loyalty, Gratitude, Self Control, Perseverance and Indomitable Spirit

Not only are these Character Traits important for a successful Martial Artist, they are important to achieving success in any area of life. It is not possible to achieve a Black Belt in the Martial Arts, and behave as a White Belt at home or other area of life. Becoming a Black Belt is a life changing experience.

To teach the character development aspect of Zen Dan Kwan training, each month the School focuses on one of these Character Traits. The Instructors discuss the meaning and application of the Character Trait in the Martial Arts classes as the students train. The Instructors also set the students homework assignments based on these Character Traits, which deepen the students’ understanding of the Character Trait. These talks and assignments are very targeted to each of the age groups at Zen Dan Kwan. This means that each age group, from the pre school students through to the adults students are encouraged to consider this aspect of their training. They are also given the opportunity to do so in a way that is meaningful to their age and life experience.

By choosing Zen Dan Kwan School of Martial Arts you are embarking on a journey of discovery. You will discover how to regain control of your body through the physical practice of the Martial Arts. You will also discover how to regain control of your mind through the discipline of the classes and the character development programme. The combination of mental growth and physical health will enable you to gain control over your life and empower you to achieve extraordinary things.
