About Zen Dan Kwan
Zen Dan Kwan School of Martial Arts is a special place. Using the time honoured principles of traditional Martial Arts, we teach students of all ages to break through their personal limitations and achieve success in their lives.
We teach our students to walk with confidence, act with courage and adopt respect as a way of life.
Zen Dan Kwan literally means “a Black Belt School where the highest mental discipline and perfection of character are practiced.”
It is through the consistent teachings of the deeper meaning of the Martial Arts that sets the style of Zen Dan Kwan apart from many other Arts practiced.
The name Zen Dan Kwan has several components. Zen reflects the principles we have of the highest mental discipline and perfection of character. Dan is the universally recognized term for Black Belt, and Kwan is Korean for School. This name also pays tribute to our Korean traditions, as well as giving each student of the School a sense of direction and purpose.
From your very first class, training at Zen Dan Kwan School of Martial Arts is a life changing experience.
Our School environment is one of learning and studying the Martial Arts. We believe that the “practice” of Martial Arts is simply not enough. Its true value is only realised through the serious “study” of the Martial Arts.
Another fundamental belief of the School is that technique is always secondary to spirit. If the spirit is willing and the attitude is correct, technique will come with time. There is no pressure to get perfect technique straight away. There is always encouragement and support to enable the student to become a little better today than they were yesterday.
In addition, the School places a large emphasis on the concept of ‘Partners, Not Opponents’. In the children's classes this takes the form of taking turns, using correct etiquette and using line skills. In the Adult classes, it is a fundamental concept of respect for fellow students. All of this makes Zen Dan Kwan School of Martial Arts a very special place to train.
